Abdominoplasty

Dr. Miguel Fernández Calderón, www.miguelfernandezcalderon.com has extensive experience in Abdominoplasty in Albacete and Madrid. Also known as abdominal dermolipectomy. This is a surgical procedure which aims to slim the abdomen. In the procedure, the abdominal wall is reconstructed, eliminating excess skin and fat.

What does abdominoplasty in Albacete and Madrid consist of?

Pregnancy, weight loss and the ageing process can cause a loss of skin elasticity in the abdomen. As a consequence, the abdomen begins to have excess skin and fat, as well as an increase in waist circumference. These problems can be corrected with an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck.

During the consultation with the doctor, the expectations and needs of each patient are assessed. The quality of the skin, the amount and location of fat, and whether or not the muscles of the abdominal wall are separated from the skin are also analysed during this consultation.

This procedure is also indicated to remove scars from previous surgeries and stretch marks. The specialist will determine if the patient is a candidate for the surgery and will indicate the care to be taken before and after an abdominoplasty.

Who is a candidate for abdominoplasty in Albacete and Madrid?

All people who have excess skin and flaccidity in the abdominal area, as well as those who have fat deposits in this area are candidates for abdominal dermolipectomy. Specially if they are unable to correct the problem with diet and exercise. Both men and women can have a tummy tuck.

It is advisable for people who have experienced significant weight loss, because there is a significant amount of skin remaining in the lower abdominal area. It is also a perfect surgery for people after several pregnancies because it allows flabby skin to be removed.

To undergo abdominoplasty in Albacete and Madrid you must be in good health. It is not recommended for people with coagulation problems. It is also contraindicated for smokers because they may have scarring problems. The surgeon will recommend that you stop smoking several weeks before the operation and during the post-operative period.

Before the operation, tests are also carried out to ensure that the patient is fit to undergo the operation. The specialist is the best person to decide whether or not you can have this surgery. Prior consultations are important to discuss risks and expectations. All this with the intention of protecting the patient’s health.

How is an abdominal dermolipectomy performed?

The abdominoplasty procedure in Albacete and Madrid is performed with general anaesthesia. The abdominoplasty is performed through an incision that is hidden in the area of the underwear. Through this incision, the abdominal muscles, skin and fat are remodelled. The aim is to improve the shape of the abdomen and navel. Stretch marks and skin laxity are also eliminated.

In general, it is associated with individualised liposuction or liposculpture of the adjacent areas (flanks, abdomen, back…) to improve the result. As well as achieving a better overall silhouette. The surgery usually requires one or two days of hospitalisation and relative rest for ten days.

These days are spent with moderate discomfort that subsides with the prescribed painkillers.

During the first month an abdominal compressive garment or abdominoplasty girdle must be worn continuously. This will help to cope with the discomfort resulting from the operation. Afterwards, physical exercise is usually resumed as usual while maintaining precautions in the abdominal area. The swelling in the area will continue for about three to four months. After that time you will feel much better.

Two different indications for abdominoplasty – two different abdominoplasty procedures

The abdominoplasty procedure associated with liposuction is indicated in two basic situations that must be distinguished.

  1. The fundamental one is the correction of the abdominal sequelae of pregnancy. It is therefore a much more popular procedure for women than for men.
  2. The second indication is the correction of the after-effects of obesity or excess weight on the skin.

As there are two different indications, there are also two types of defects that can be corrected. There are two variants of this procedure.

Excess skin

Patients with sequelae of pregnancy have excess skin in the central abdominal region with a significant diastasis of the rectus abdominis, and often fat accumulation in the flank or supraumbilical region.

In patients with sequelae of obesity, excess skin usually predominates in the central area, but also with large or moderate peripheral skin excess. The rectus abdominis is usually not diastasised and the remaining excess fat is variable.

Abdominal dermolipectomy postoperative care

Although the postoperative care for abdominoplasty is similar in both cases, the surgical technique changes.

In patients with sequelae of pregnancy, the abdominoplasty will include a limited suprapubic scar, often with flank liposuction and abdominal muscle plication to correct rectus diastasis.

In patients with sequelae of morbid obesity, the surgical technique leaves a more elongated suprapubic scar. This helps to remove the more peripheral excess skin. Occasionally they may require techniques including circumferential dermolipectomy. These patients usually do not have rectus diastasis and therefore do not require rectus plication. In fact, performing a rectus plication when it is not indicated may increase sagging in the lateral region of the scar. Depending on the remaining excess fat, associated flank liposuction may be required.

Result of abdominoplasty surgery

Abdominoplasty with associated liposuction is one of the operations with the highest satisfaction rate in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.

This procedure allows us to correct all the changes resulting from pregnancy and the after-effects of obesity. Excess skin, diastasis recti and fat accumulation can be corrected by means of a complete technique. And we only pay the price of a scar that remains hidden in the underwear.
