Labiaplasty or
intimate surgery

Sometimes our genital area is not aesthetically attractive, due to genetic causes, or because it develops during development or over the years. This can occur when the size of our labia majora and labia minora do not have adequate proportions. The solution in this type of case is labiaplasty in Madrid. At Dr Miguel Fernández Calderón’s Cosmetic Surgery Clinic we talk to you about this treatment.

Labiaplasty or intimate surgery

Some women may find that the labia minora in their intimate area protrude. This can cause discomfort in everyday life, when riding a bike or just taking a walk. On other occasions the labia majora or pubis may be excessive.

Labiaplasty is the plastic surgery that corrects this type of disproportion.

It is performed with local anaesthesia and sedation. A careful excision of the mucosa and skin of the labia minora is performed; or liposuction of the labia majora is carried out to achieve an adequate proportion. In this area the scars, although they may be uncomfortable for the first few weeks, become imperceptible over time.

The labiaplasty procedure in Madrid is performed on an outpatient basis. It involves rest from sexual activity while the healing process is completed, usually the first two weeks.

Which patients can undergo labiaplasty surgery?

Labiaplasty is indicated for healthy patients who consider it necessary to change their intimate region. These patients usually have excess skin and mucous membranes in the labia minora. In addition to an aesthetic alteration, the patient may wish to correct a functional alteration. This excess may be uncomfortable during exercise or when having intimate relations.

In order to perform the procedure, the patient’s hormonal status must be stable. Therefore, surgery should never be performed during pubertal development or pregnancy.

Patients should be well informed before the procedure about the appropriate technique, its advantages and disadvantages.

Why do labia minora grow?

The tissue of the labia minora is very sensitive to hormonal changes. This is why it is common for patients who are going through puberty to have excessive growth in the area. On other occasions, it is a consequence of pregnancy or even external hormone treatments.

Before the labiaplasty procedure is performed, the growth stimulus must be removed. It is necessary to wait until pubertal development and pregnancy are over. Then analyse the benefit of hormone treatments.

How is labiaplasty performed?

Planning the intimate surgery

In the examination during the consultation, the anatomy of the region must be analysed. This analysis includes:

  1. Shape and size of the labia minora.
  2. Volume and shape of the labia majora.
  3. Morphology of the clitoral hood and its arrangement.

Patients usually have prominent labia minora with labia majora of variable size. This causes discomfort during exercise and intimate intercourse.

Excess labia minora can be modified by excision of the more superficial tissue. A minimum width of one centimetre should always be maintained. This will prevent disturbances in the function of the labia minora. This will not increase the risk of repeated urinary tract infections.

When the size of the labia minora is not very large, but the labia majora is very small, an unaesthetic excess can be seen. On these occasions, the superficial part of the labia minora is removed. The labia majora is enlarged. This enhancement is performed using the lipofilling technique. Fat is normally removed from the abdominal region, purified and infiltrated into the area to be treated.

The clitoral hood can sometimes be very visible and can be aesthetically improved. For this purpose, a mucosal skin excision of the superficial part of the hood is performed and then the erectile tissue is anchored to the pubis with resorbable sutures.

Labiaplasty technique

Although the technique varies from patient to patient, the standard procedure is usually performed with local anaesthesia and sedation. The method for labiaplasty in Madrid is as follows:

  • First of all, the patient is placed in the gynaecological position. This is the beginning of the pre-surgical marking.
  • Then the sedation and infiltration with local anaesthesia with adrenaline for anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia begins.
  • Afterwards, a cutaneous-mucosal excision of the labium minora and cap is performed. Always leaving at least 1 centimetre of the labium minora.
  • The clitoris is then anchored to the pubis. This is done to avoid its exposure when it is excessive. This is done with internal resorbable sutures.
  • Finally, lipofilling or fat filling of the labia majora is performed in a delicate manner. The surgical wound is then closed with absorbable sutures and a compressive dressing is applied.

Labia majora surgery

Although labiaplasty is most commonly performed on the labia minora, there are also situations where it is performed on the labia majora.

As mentioned before, it can be performed to give them more volume through lipofilling. This helps to achieve greater symmetry between both labia and improve their appearance.

However, there are cases in which the patient’s labia majora are very large and they want to reduce it.

Labia reduction is the least common type of labiaplasty.

Anaesthesia for labiaplasty in Madrid

Intimate surgery is usually performed with local anaesthesia and sedation. The patient is first sedated. Subsequently, anaesthesia is applied. The infiltration of the anaesthetic into the tissue is uncomfortable and is therefore performed after sedation.

Sometimes when the surgery only involves excision of the superficial labial margin, it can be performed with local anaesthesia.

Patients who are very nervous or who are having combined surgeries may require general anaesthesia. In these procedures, local anaesthesia is also infiltrated for postoperative analgesia.

The local anaesthesia used for labiaplasty in Madrid also provides post-operative analgesia for 5 to 6 hours.

The duration of the operation is 1 to 2 hours. All in order to be able to outline all the aesthetic details of the region. This leads us to achieve the best aesthetic and functional results.

Recovery from intimate surgery

At the end of the operation, the patient wears a compressive dressing that must be worn for a few hours. It is also recommended to wear tight-fitting intimate apparel for the first week to maintain the compression.

After the operation, the patient goes home. The patient can carry out her usual hygiene with a neutral gel. The patient’s physiological needs are not interrupted and no urinary catheter is used, so she can lead a normal life, avoiding sporting activities for the first few days and maintaining relative rest.

The operation involves slight discomfort. During the first postoperative hours, the residual analgesia of the local anaesthesia is maintained. The patient will take painkillers and antibiotics for two days.

The swelling of the area is noticeable as the tissues are very elastic. This should not be a cause for concern, as it is completely normal. Ecchymosis also frequently appears, which is considered normal, and it is possible that there may be slight bleeding during the first 72 hours.

However, a very significant pain on one side when associated with a very noticeable increase in volume should alert us. This could be a haematoma that may require drainage on an outpatient basis.

After one week, exercise and a normal social and working life can be resumed.

How long will I have to wait to have sex?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions before surgery. It is a simple and quick recovery procedure. However, it is necessary to wait a month before having sexual relations. And it will be during the check-up, after that time, that the doctor confirms that it is progressing normally and can be performed.

Benefits of labiaplasty in Madrid

Women who have chosen this surgery manage to improve the aesthetics of their intimate area.

In addition, they are able to recover the lost turgidity. This gives them greater security and improves their quality of life.

But, in addition to this, they obtain other benefits. Among which we can mention the following:

Less pain

When the labia minora protrude a lot, they can become uncomfortable beyond the aesthetic aspect. It is possible that they may cause pain due to rubbing during sexual intercourse or when practising certain sports. By correcting the size of the labia with surgery, the source of the discomfort is also eliminated.

Increased comfort when exercising

As mentioned before, women suffer from pain and discomfort due to the size of the labia. Even when doing activities such as walking or exerting oneself, it can be very painful, but through surgery it is possible to correct this. In this way the patient will be able to practice any sport without worrying about the discomfort in her intimate area.

Better sexual relations

The size of the labia minora can also become a problem when having sexual intercourse. In fact, it can cause a lot of pain, because during penetration they tend to push into the vagina. By having labiaplasty, a woman will be able to have much more satisfying intercourse.

No more problems with clothing

Tight clothing causes rubbing in the intimate area and therefore also causes pain. But not only that, rubbing can also lead to irritation and even diseases such as folliculitis and candidiasis.

Improved hygiene

Hypertrophy also makes hygiene in the intimate area more difficult, leading to irritation. During menstruation the problems can be increased. Female intimate surgery solves these problems.

Quick and easy recovery

Local anaesthesia is used in this surgery. Therefore, it is not necessary to hospitalise the patient; she will return home the same day of the operation.

The postoperative period is quite simple. If the patient follows the doctor’s recommendations, he or she will soon be back to normal routine.

Risks of labiaplasty

The risks of labiaplasty in Madrid are low and, if the surgeon is good, the risks are almost non-existent. The most common complications are listed below:

  1. Bleeding or haematoma. The technique used must be precise and relative rest must be maintained for the first few days. If it still appears, ambulatory drainage may be necessary.
  2. Wound dehiscence. This complication is very rare with the technique we use. But with another type it is relatively frequent. This is a moist region, so the scarring process may be slowed down.
  3. There are other risks in the operation at the sensory or functional level, but these are absolutely exceptional complications.

Results of labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a simple procedure with a very high level of satisfaction. A refined and careful technique allows an aesthetic remodelling of the area while limiting the risks.

The patient achieves an aesthetic and functional improvement of a very intimate anatomical region.

The significant swelling in the first few weeks means that the definitive result is not visible until a month later. In general, after 3 months, the result of the labiaplasty in Madrid is evaluated, after which the patient is discharged from the surgery.
